 Gravestone Art: Foil Impressions

All graveyards, especially the earliest ones, are an important part of our national heritage. These early stones are archaeological artifacts, revealing vital information about craftsmanship, folk art, religious beliefs, historic events, and genealogical information. Markers in every graveyard and cemetery must be treated with utmost care. Visitors must be aware of and conform to all local and state regulations regarding any activity in cemeteries and graveyards.

The original foil impressions for these rubbings were made with the permission of local authorities in conformation with New Hampshire state law. Training workshops conducted by the Association of Graveyard Studies provided the knowledge for choosing sound stones and utilizing proper techniques to protect each stone from any possible damage.

The process involves four steps:

1. Create the original impression following all guidelines for stone safety

        2. Cast a mold of the headstone from the original impression

        3. Place lightweight copper or gold foil over the mold

        4. Beginning with a soft cloth, work through a series of six wooden tools to

            clearly define the carving

Each rubbing in this collection was made from a cast of the original headstone, and all proceeds go toward the reatoration of the Pine Street West Cemetery.
